The goal of the Solar Samaritan Ministry is to mobilize the men of First UMC in Somerset to provide solar panels for needy families in Somerset County thus giving them long-term relief from electric costs because the Renogy solar panels we install are guaranteed for 25 years. Here is a picture of our men at work on the first house to receive solar panels on August 25, 2012. Interested persons in the ministry may join the men for breakfast at King’s Family Restaurant in Somerset, PA at 7:30 am the fourth ( 4th ) Saturday of each month to pray about and plan the next installation of solar panels.
REPORT: On November 22, 2014 at King’s Restaurant in Somerset, PA we enjoyed hearing from our guest speaker, Rev. Pat Watkins, a U.M. missionary from the Virginia Annual Conference. Rev. Watkins shared how the global United Methodist Church has a growing interest in sustaining God’s renewable creation and helping ministries be more sustainable and greener for the glory of God. He stated that our ministry combines a motivation to help the poor as well as uses green energy from the sun in a way that it brings glory to God and truly empowers people to live better lives. We were affirmed and blessed to hear those words from a seasoned missionary. The Rev. Pat Watkins is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. He is guiding a new, globally-focused United Methodist Ministry with God’s Renewed Creation, on behalf of the Global Ministries Board and also closely related to the Council of Bishop – See more at the United Methodist Missions Web Site. Rev. Watkins asked the Solar Samaritans to create a way to duplicate our ministry by developing a “Solar Energy Kit” for UMCOR so that solar panels can be installed anywhere. We are currently working on that project.
